The Maple Syrup Diet, also known as the Lemonade Diet, is a form of fasting that was made famous by Beyonce. When the celebrity had to lose weight fast for her role in Dreamgirls, she turned to this fasting diet – dropping 20 pounds in the process. The Maple Syrup Diet is actually more of a cleansing process than a weight loss program per se, but many who have done the program have shed a significant amount of weight throughout the detoxification process.

The Maple Syrup Diet is a relatively short-lived weight loss program that takes up to 10 days to complete. The diet involves drinking a concoction of lemon juice mixed with maple syrup, which is why it goes by both the titles listed above.

How does it Work?

The Maple Syrup Diet primarily consists of a concoction made of fresh lemon juice, Grade B maple syrup, cayenne pepper and purified water. Recipes are included both for a single glass and for a pitcher. Participants drink this mixture for the entire 10-day cycle. No solid foods are eaten during this time. In addition to dropping up to 10-20 pounds during the Maple Syrup Diet, participants also thoroughly cleanse their digestive system, which may result in frequent bathroom trips during the program.

Because no solid foods are allowed during the Maple Syrup Diet, there are no complex meal plans to follow. There are also no recommendations for exercise during the program. In fact, most participants will probably find they have little energy for physical activity after not eating for more than a week.

While there are some potential side effects that often occur with this diet plan (headaches, dizziness and bad breath, for example), many participants say the symptoms are usually seen in the first few days of the cleanse, as the body is actively ridding itself of a buildup of toxins.
