The Lemonade Diet, also known in some weight loss circles as the Master Cleanse Diet, is a fasting program designed to cleanse the body from the inside out and jumpstart a weight loss program.

The diet was originally introduced around 50 years ago, but continues to go through small tweaks and changes as it is passed down through other generations of dieters. The original creator of the Lemonade Diet, Stanley Burroughs, was reported to have no formal health training.

The diet begins with the basic premise that weight gain is due in part to a buildup of toxins within the body. When toxins are removed, bodily systems can function more effectively and fat and weight gain are less likely.

How does it Work?

The Lemonade Diet involves refraining from all food, other than a lemon juice concoction for seven to 12 days. The recipe for the Lemonade Diet may vary slightly, depending on the reference you use, but the basic ingredients of the lemonade include lemon juice, genuine maple syrup, cayenne pepper and purified water. This concoction is consumed six to 10 times during the day. It is also recommended that dieters drink plenty of purified water throughout the fast, including a full glass after each dose of lemonade.

In addition to helping users lose weight – up to one pound a day, according to the estimates on some websites – there are other health benefit claims made by the Lemonade Diet. These include a more efficient digestive system with fewer toxins and a boosted immune system.

However, many users of the Lemonade Diet also report unpleasant side effects while doing the fast, including headaches, stomach cramps and foul breath. The majority do experience significant weight loss, probably more from the lack of calories during that time than the perceived cleansing effect on the body.

Most dieters recommend doing the Lemonade Diet three or four times a year to keep the body running in top condition. The diet should not be performed for longer than 12 days at a time. For those who need to lose a significant amount of weight, they can do the Lemonade diet for 12 days, break for a month and then do the diet again. During the month break, they are advised to continue drinking the lemon juice concoction and limiting themselves to one light meal in the evening.
